Background : The National Medical Center serves as a control tower for emergency medical support. In this study, we introduce the Department of Pharmacy¡¯s medication supply procedure and management plan for disaster preparedness, and review the tasks undertaken by pharmacists in the process.
Methods : We introduce the current status of supply and management of medications for domestic disaster response, and discuss the changes made by the transition to supply/management system centered on the Department of Pharmacy. The role of pharmacists was analyzed retrospectively by dividing 1) pharmacists¡¯ interventions in the process of selecting medication for disasters, 2) the management of stockpiled medicine, and 3) the operation of pharmacies in mobile hospitals during disasters.
Results : The hospital pharmacists played a crucial role in the selection of medicines for disaster response. They can provide various and professional drug information about medicine for disaster and operation of pharmacy in mobile hospitals.
Conclusion : Compared to other countries, the role of pharmacists in the response and recovery stages was not clearly defined. It is necessary to establish publicity, education, and standard operating procedures pursuant to the role of pharmacists during disasters.
